Derinkuyu Underground City & Ihlara Valley Cappadocia Tour

Visit Cappadocia’s top-rated and must-see attractions on this guided full-day tour. Experience a 4 km stroll along the Melendiz River in the lovely Ihlara Valley, visit the underground city of Derinkuyu, the deepest in Cappadocia

Begin this tour with a trip to the famed underground town of Derinkuyu. It is the largest underground city in Cappadocia that has been found touching the depth of around 85 meters. Derinkuyu was opened for travelers in 1969, but tourists still have links to less than half of it. About 20 000 residents could be accommodated in this multi-level underground city (up to 18 levels). Derinkuyu is a huge complex that involves living quarters, mosques, schools, markets, factories, stables, etc. It has at least 15 000 ventilation shafts and an underground water well system that provides fresh air and fresh water for the people. With the big rolling stone doors, the underground city could be closed from the inside. Every floor could be individually locked. Visit the valley of Ihlara and the river Melendiz after Derinkuyu. Ihlara Valley is a 14-kilometer-long canyon built of the same porous volcanic rock seen throughout Cappadocia. It was formed by volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and erosion thousands of years ago. Ihlara Valley was one of the early Christians ‘ first populated regions and hundreds of churches were built into the gorge walls. Indescribable elegance, pure nature and the canyon’s historical significance render it one of Cappadocia’s most popular trekking destinations. This trip involves a 4 km stroll along the Melendiz River through the Ihlara Valley. Move through the vineyards and pistachio plants, hear calming sounds of flowing water and watch an area’s rich fauna (butterflies, frogs, lizards, birds, etc.).

Be confident for a delicious lunch in a cafe over the river Melendiz while hiking. Eat freshly cooking popular Turkish products. Selime Monastery is the last place to visit, amazing gigantic fairy chimney. It is Cappadocia’s largest religious structure dating back to the 13th century. Due to its size and unique design, Selime Monastery is a must-see spot while you are in Cappadocia. There is a cathedral-sized church inside the monastery with stunning paintings, living quarters as well, a large kitchen, numerous storages, a stable, a missionary school, etc. At the same period, the monastery of Selime could hold around 5000 men. The tour comes to an end after visiting this great place and you will be dropped off to your hotel.
